Solar radiation – Sun protection: Everything you need to know

The sun is an essential element of life. It is scientifically proven that the solar radiation is particularly beneficial for our health, as it stimulates the production of vitamin D which is responsible for the absorption of calcium by the body. Also, the solar radiation increases the levels of serotonin, a hormone responsible for the feeling of well-being.
Nevertheless, the solar radiation is a very important risk factor for the skin, especially during the summer months. The sun emits energy in a wide range of radiation – visible light, infrared (which we feel as heat) and ultraviolet or UV (Ultra Violet). H ultraviolet radiation is classified into three types: UVA, UVB & UVC.

H UVA radiation penetrates the deepest layers of the skin and causes lesions in the DNA lead to the premature aging of the skin and the appearance υπερκερατώσεων, wrinkle and end of carcinogenicity.
The UVB radiation is responsible for the creation of the burns, while the UVC does not manage to penetrate the atmosphere. As a natural defense against uv radiation, the body increases the production of the pigment melanin in the skin, which absorbs the UV and converts it into heat. However, the photoprotection provided by the melanin is not enough and so the use of a sunscreen product is essential throughout the course of the year and not just during the summer months.
On the market there is a huge variety of sunscreen products that can meet the needs of even the most demanding consumers. For the selection of the appropriate sunscreen product should take into account factors such as:

  • The type of skin (φωτότυπος) that depends on the reaction of the skin to solar exposure and is directly related to the color of skin and hair
  • The frequency and time of exposure to solar radiation
  • The presence of moles
  • Taking medication that can cause photosensitivity

The index of sun protection SPF refers to the amount of time of exposure to solar radiation before they become visible marks from the report (redness of the skin, etc.) and is directly related to the exposure of the skin in the UVB region.
Particular attention, however, must be shown to the protection provided by the sunscreen product and in the UVA region, as it is responsible for premature aging and skin cancer. The legislation stipulates that the protection in the UVA region should be at least 1/3 of the protection in the UVB region, while there are products that provide equivalent protection in the UVA & UVB region. This is indicated on the package with the mark (in accordance with the system Boots):

Finding the ideal protection factor (SPF) and appropriate texture sunscreen product is very important for every consumer to combine the high sun protection with the pleasure that can offer a cosmetic. So, depending on your skin type to choosing the right sunscreen product:
